Gestures

This Week's Session

this week's session (10/24/26) is from Heavy Manners Library, led by Tom Herpich. Tom's approach to the human form is inspired by his professor's approach, James McMullan. In James McMullan's "High-Focus Drawing", the approach uncovered is by means of focusing on both starting the sketch foundationally and honoring the specificity of a muscle group (as in drawing in the grain of a muscle group). So an initial approach of the hips or chest for example are pivotal to anchoring the pose. Building from there renders a lesser chance of getting lost in details and busying a sketch (in my observation, a more course-corrective mind model for line economy). this underlying principle is core to my animation approach so I have found engaging with it extremely informative for developing a mental gestalt of a figure in a scene. This mental shorthand allows for me to focus on how an action informs the form, allowing for stylization while not alienating the audience.

Takeaways

Weekly/Biweekly sessions of figure drawing has allowed me to develop a deeper visual library to draw from. Figure drawing has probably one of the highest ROI that I have encountered as an artist.
